Ep.3/ Freedom
Freedom. What does it mean to you? For each and every one of us the answer to this question will be different. Are you free?
By definition, freedom is the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants. Freedom is an experience, a feeling or maybe an emotion or sensation.
To me, freedom means that I have the power, capacity and ability to honour who I am. I am able to love who I love, travel with no worries, experience new challenges as well as speak my truest thoughts. This is something that I think we all take for granted during our busy day to day life but something I have tried really hard to appreciate more as I dive deeper into my twenties.
Freedom is delicate but also one of life’s greatest gifts.
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
– Viktor Frankl
Freedom allows us to choose a mindset which paves our future decisions and life. Freedom has helped me to unlock a different perspective. It requires me to be open and willing to look differently at my experiences. We can all be guilty of questioning if we are making the “correct” decision but if it is your choice then it is your freedom. We also tend to put other people’s feelings before our own which ultimately leads to feeling stuck - the opposite of freedom. How can we every progress if we are not free?
“The best road to progress is freedoms road.” - John F Kennedy.
The freedom mindset requires the ability to accept, adapt and change your thoughts. Shift your way of thinking and believing. We can choose to grow with the challenge. Mindsets of successful people, those living the life they wish and are free to live that is, are strongly characterised by adaptability.
Freedom is created as a product of mindset.
The other part is getting through what is ‘possible’. That can be what is possible for you or people “like you”. I’m sure many of you - like me - were told and/or believe that you have to go to university. You have to buy a house. You have to have children. You should be grateful for any attention. Not to ever complain about your job. These are all limiting beliefs based around fear and fitting in. Freedom is based in hope, exploration, and curiosity - values which I choose to try and follow.
One of my favourite ways to experience freedom is travelling and trying new activities.
In 2021 I went on my first solo “holiday” (work-experience trip…) and was gifted with the most overwhelming feelings of liberation and empowerment. By experiencing this kind of freedom, I started to understand myself better, had the alone time and headspace to make key decisions surrounding my future, and spent some quality time with the most important person in my life: myself!
I would urge everyone to delve into what gives them freedom. Unlock your mindset and be free!
Catch you soon, Sach.
